How e-Learning Benefits the Environment

In honor of Earth Day, we wanted to take a look at how our favorite thing, e-Learning, can help the environment! e-Learning is great for the environment because it reduces the energy costs associated with workers traveling to and from training. By delivering training online, you save on fuel for transportation (plane, train, bus, car or taxi), electricity to light and heat conference rooms, training facilities and hotel rooms, as well as the electricity and water to launder sheets and towels at those hotels. Plus, you can decrease the amount of paper wasted in the form of training manuals, brochures, business cards and handouts.Traveling takes a toll on the environment—and you! Check out these facts:

  • The world’s 16,000 commercial aircrafts produce more than 600 million tons of c02 annually. This is almost as much as produced by the entire African continent.
  • Gas prices in some parts of the United States are close to $4 per gallon. If that’s not enough to convince you to keep the car in park and skip that classroom training, consider the fact that 30,000 people are killed by car emissions annually, just in the United States.
  • The average American spends 51 minutes a day commuting to and from work—or
training—and spends $8,758 annually on transportation.
Are all those handouts necessary? Here are a few more environmental facts to consider:
  • Paper manufacturing is the 3rd largest user of fossil fuels worldwide. If the US cut office paper use by just 10%, it would prevent the emission of 1.6 million tons of greenhouse gasses—the equivalent of taking 280,000 cars off the road.
  • Each year over 350 million ink cartridges are thrown into landfills. Each cartridge’s plastic takes 1,000 years to decompose.
Save on conference center rental costs and energy use by training online. Here’s how:
  • Eliminating physical training spaces means smaller buildings and reducing energy use associated with heating, cooling and powering these facilities.

  • According to the EPA, approximately 3 million tons of office furniture and furnishings are discarded each year.
This Earth Day, be green and develop more e-Learning! The environment will thank you, and so will your bottom line. For more blog posts about e-Learning and the latest industry trends,
